This year is going to be different for the students here for various reasons. Besides location and mode, students will learn and build upon the elements of music. We will take the opportunity to grow in our unique learning environment as we experience the world through music.
What is happening here?
Welcome to the 2022-2023 School Year!
March 2023
March is Music in Our Schools Month (MISOM). Though some of the students participated in advocating for the visual and performing arts last month, this month we will revisit this with a focus on music. Go to the BLOG to see what is happening at MIS during this time.
February 2023
February truly was a busy month filled with professional development, learning about clefs and the staff, and performing specific parts of pieces. Some students performed for the Black History Program. They played percussion pieces--one that was written that morning with multiple parts. Check out the BLOG to see what was happening in the MIS Music Room.
January 2023
There has been a lot happening in the MIS Music Room this school. There also have been some updates to the Music Resources. Check out the BLOG for more recent updates and information. Let me know what you liked about each section.
Have a great, safe, positive 2023!
June 2022

Take a Look Back at 2021-2022 School Year!
April 2022
Check out the BLOG for more info.
March was MIOSM, and we used that time to prepare for Art in the Park on April 7th.
April is a busy month for important arts related things like March. It is National Poetry Month and Jazz Appreciation Month. Take time to write a poem and then set the verses to some jazz. If you are not up for writing one, find some good ones to read or attend a poetry slam. There are so many jazz offerings in the state AND on the web. Use www.accuradio.com to find what kind of jazz suits you.
March 2022
Check out the BLOG to know more about what has been happening here.
February was a busy month as I had to prepare for too many things. January saw that we finally were going to get some resources due to some hard work put in last school year. January also was full of students learning the notes on the staves. We had to take a detour due to February things, but this led to reading rhythms being reinforced again. Hopefully we will be able to go back to the staff and much more.
Remember, March is Music In Our Schools Month (MIOSM), Theatre In Our Schools Month (TIOS), and Youth Art Month (YAM). Check out what is offered in the community in the arts during this time.
December 2021
Fifth grade is continuing learning about Reggae, syncopation, and dotted notes.
Fourth grade has had the monumental task of continuing learning about octaves, patriotic music, canons, and descants.
Third is wrapping up their unit of learning about identifying different voices, the musical alphabet, and rounds & canons.
November 2021
November is full of so many things! November is National Native American Heritage Month. We also honor Veterans during November also. This November we finally are making it to a new unit in Quaver, but you have so many other things to cover. I look forward to you all showing your shine!
October 2021
We have been using Quaver and going in depth with certain topics in each grade. The third and fourth grades have been working with rhythm while the fifth is expanding that with a focus on meter. We are looking forward to getting the Quaver curriculum so that student accounts can be setup and used.
Remember that October is Bullying Prevention/Anti-Bullying Month. I usually do a "Don't Laugh at Me" lesson that focuses on anti-bullying and genre. With all that's been happening this month, we haven't done it this school year. I will make some thing available to you on the topic of bullying. October also houses Red Ribbon Week. You will be creating rhythm pieces to accompany class brainstorming results relating to the reasons for Red Ribbon Week.
September 2021
There is so much happening in September! Hopefully it is going great for you so far this school year.
September 15th through October 15th is Hispanic Heritage Month. Flocabulary is having contest where you can get your song made into a Flocabulary video.
Check out the BLOG for more info.
August 2021
Welcome back to school! We will start the school year going over procedures, expectations, drills, and pre-assessments. I look forward to meeting you.

Take a Look Back on the 2020-2021 School Year
- April 2021-
- Jazz Appreciation Month (JAM) and National Poetry Month are what April brings. Check out the Smithsonian National Museum of American History (Bering Center) and National Poerty Month to learn more about each of these important celebrations of creativity.
- March 2021-
- MIOSM time is here! Music In Our Schools Month is March (so is Youth Art Month). This year's theme is "MUSIC: The sound of my heart" with this year's being "Sing From Your Heart." We wrote letters to our school board members and state representatives to thank them for supporting music in our schools.
- February 2021-
- This month we were able to learn the history about and perform a song. We delved into the form of the verse and had the opportunity to sing using COVID-19 precautions.
- January 2021-
- You guys are so resilient! We have started January with introducing the Medieval Period in music history and reviewing our beginning note values. We've stepped it up by having to aurally identify the patterns with its written notation. We also had a jam-packed Martin Luther King, Jr. lesson where we experienced how music and social studies intermingle (we saw this in the previos lesson as well). We definitely saw a message in many ways!
- December 2020-
- What a month this has been! I really enjoyed doing "Man, It's Cold" and the "Sleigh Ride" play along with you. FORM is what was highlighted in those sessions as well as having fun. These lessons also helped you be exposed to more notation; you had a lot of notes to explore rhythmically. I am impressed with how much some of you have grown and the gifts you have displayed!
- November 2020--
- We started the month with the Remote Learning Students going live virtually. Now we are back to hybrid learning. I will make all the asynchronous lessons available for you to view because I have not had most of you. This way we will be on the same page or close to it.
- Check out Flocabulary's "Veterans Day" and "The Navajo" videos on our Links and Things page. They will be available to watch for a limited time.
- "November is Native American Heritage Month, or as it is commonly referred to, American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month. The month is a time to celebrate rich and diverse cultures, traditions, and histories and to acknowledge the important contributions of Native people." https://bit.ly/3pjqm0D
- We will continue with rhythm and meter as you are introduced to ostinato, triplets, and beamed sixteenth notes.
- October 2020--
- We are working on steady beat, strong/weak beats, and meter in the class. Our individual music kits are coming together piece by piece.
- The f2f classes and Virtual Academy will expericence a variation of my annual Bullying Awareness/Prevention Month lesson(s). These usually focus on genre, close reading video snapshots, and the viewing and discussion of various clips that expose students to different ways to communicate about this topic--from drawing to dance, but this year it will be modified.
- September 2020--
- We are starting out this school year by getting to know each other.
- Our first music concept is STEADY BEAT.
- We will follow steady beat with strong and weak beats followed by meter.
- Celebrating Latinx Identities Contest (Enteries must be submitted by October 15th.)
- Here is the Nearpod lesson link that goes with this. Student Contest: Celebrating Latinx Identities
- For the students who have made it to "This Is My Chair" or "Billy," please teach someone what you have learned.
- Students have access to a shared username to access Flocab videos and some activities from home. Check out RESOURCES on my MIS teacher website page for info on how to see those videos.
- We will use Music Online Play for some of the virtual (and hopefully f2f) sessions. Here is a link to Music Online Play; I hope to have more info for you and how to use this site to build your music knowledge. Right now the games are available for you.
