It is that time of year again. March is Music in Our Schools Month or MIOSM. We may carry the event into April as different projects are announced that the students can do to bring awareness and celebrate having music in our schools. #MIOSM #MusicIsAllOfUs #MusicEdFunding The theme of Music In Our Schools Month® (MIOSM®) 2023 is “Music Is All of Us.” MIOSM is a national event to celebrate and raise awareness around the importance of music education for all students—and to remind citizens that school is where all students should have access to music. Music educators from across the country use MIOSM as a platform to bring students, families, local community members, and state and local elected officials’ attention to their school’s music program and the benefits that music provides to students of all ages. from nafme.org

February really was February Full! For me it was attending the South Carolina Music Educators Association Professional Development Conference and participating in the face to face day of South Carolina Arts Advocacy Week activities sponsored by the South Carolina Arts Alliance. We were able to meet with our local legislators to inform them on the impact of the arts in our communities. We also thanked them for their support of the arts. I also was awarded another South Carolina Arts Commission grant for the Marion Intermediate School music program. It will allow us to use the items from the last SCAC grant and have an artist in residence. I am looking forward to what we will get done this semester once our items are here. It is thanks to our state legislators that grants are available for us to improve our arts programs.
February Update:
I would like to thank Mrs. Hunn's homeroom for their awesome performance for the Black History Program. Also, I had some excellent assistants to thank in Jamariion Grant, Stephon Bethea, and Jovonte' Fling. Greetings! February is full once again for the MIS Music Classroom. There have been many things happening this way and I have been on the music and arts professional development kick. February is when the South Carolina Music Educators Association has its annual SCMEA Professional Development Conference. I discovered some information new to me, saw colleagues I haven't seen in a long while, experienced the SC Honors Chorus, and met some interesting vendors. I look forward to using and sharing the information I gathered from the conference.
February also is when South Carolina Arts Advocacy Week happens. I will be going to Columbia on the in-person day to share some insights from Marion Intermediate School students with our local legislators. I am excited to have what the students have written to hand to them in-person. Also, we are thanking them for supporting the arts in our schools. This will not be the last time they will hear from us; March is Music in Our Schools Month (MIOSM). We are ready to focus on advocating for music at MIS! Welcome back to the MIS Music Room with me, Ms. A. Eaddy! This semester we are going to keep moving forward with our music learning journey. We are going to learn about the parts of the staff, notes, and clefs (treble and bass). I am looking forward to what you do with your new tools. Some sites have been added to the MUSIC RESOURCES page. I will include some of them here so that you can explore the notes of the treble and bass clefs. How to Read Notes on the Staff (video) Parts of the Staff and Note Names Based on Clef (Ms. Eaddy's Blendspace) Name That Note (This one is on the resource page.) Note Exercises Here is a Quizizz packed with winter celebration info, dance, games, and fun. ENJOY!
Click below to join in on the information and fun. Winter Holiday Edition Quizizz It's been a busy time over here in the Marion Intermediate Music Room. The students learned the how to transition to and from instruments using Artie Almedia's method. We also had in-depth sessions on Orff instruments. The students were given notes to put in their music journals to help them remember the different instruments. Also, I have posted in Schoology about several art contests with Elementari.com. Find out more about the contests and enter one of them today by clicking HERE. We had a special guest in the music room from October until last week. The students had the pleasure of meeting Conner Shelley. He is a Teacher Cadet who is a future band teacher. He is already on track with leading a group of students for he is a Marion High School Band Drum Major. It has been a pleasure having Mr. Shelley in the music room. We all look forward to seeing him succeed in his chosen field. We started "Man, It's Cold" several weeks ago. There will be more about that in the next post; some of the groups have been impressive though. Below are a couple of pieces that emphasize the cold weather that happens in fall and winter. Believe it or not, it is still autumn and winter is a week away from today. A number of you have asked about drumming and keyboard information. I had hoped to have posted some resources sooner, but a lot has been going on this way. Here are some links to pages that can help you with your drumming technique and knowledge. There are some links and information on the MUSIC RESOURCES section of this site also. https://drummingreview.com/best-online-drum-lessons/ https://www.electronicdrumadvisor.com/best-online-drum-lessons/ I was looking at a couple of pages about rudiments and liked how this one was setup for beginners. https://www.electronicdrumadvisor.com/essential-drum-rudiments/
I've been asked about keyboarding also. I usually do keyboarding with my highest grade level. That isn't the case here, but I can definitely gather resources for those who would like to learn more about the topic.
After sending WEEK ONE explaining expectations, procedures, and rights & responsibilities, we started the Orff piece "Let's Play a Game" for the following two weeks. We learned this simple piece, its accompanying body percussion, and the solfege and hand signs of the melodic contour. Students also improvised a section of the piece by using their names and adding gestures. Week two of the piece was when the instrumental component of the piece was introduced. A new word was also introduced--BORDUN. There is so much we can do with this piece. I look forward to the many things that the students will do this school year.
